Doctoral courses - what rules apply for me?
The rules regarding which courses should/must be included in your studies can be found in the guidelines for doctoral studies relevant to you. Below, you can read an extract from the guidelines that apply for students admitted after 1 January 2013 and 1 July 2015 respectively. The general study plan for your third-cycle subject area may also contain information about the courses required.
The general basic courses included in doctoral studies support students’ personal development and help train skills and knowledge in statistics, philosophy of science, research ethics, communication and pedagogy. The aim of third-cycle subject courses is to provide deeper subject knowledge.
For students admitted after 1 January 2013:
The degree must include a minimum of:
- 30 course credits for a doctoral degree
- 15 course credits for a licentiate degree
The general study plan for a specific doctoral education subject may state a higher amount of minimum course credits. For a doctoral degree, up to 120 credits may be required and 60 credits for a licentiate degree
For students admitted after 1 July 2015:
In order to be awarded a doctoral or licentiate degree from SLU, the doctoral student must have studied credit-awarding courses in theory of knowledge and research ethics. These courses must have covered rules regarding cheating and plagiarism.
