It is recommended that you limit your alcohol intake to 14 units per week. Drinking more alcohol than this can be harmful to your health. It is also known as alcohol abuse. However, alcohol abuse does not necessarily mean addiction.

A lot of people binge drink occasionally, sometimes exceeding 14 units. It is dangerous, however, if you don't become physically dependent on the substance, and you can drink for long periods without drinking again, it is unlikely that you have an addiction.

If you drink alcohol frequently, your body can develop a tolerance and become dependent. Alcohol abuse can lead to emotional dependence and psychological problems. Alcohol addiction is when you become physically and mentally dependent upon alcohol.

Alcohol Addiction Risk Factors

Alcohol addiction can occur in many ways. There are no known causes. However, there are some factors that could increase your risk. The risk factors that are known to increase your chances of developing alcohol addiction include genetic predisposition, repeated exposure, and environmental factors. Your risk of developing alcoholism can be affected by your social influence, gender, and age. According to estimates, 9% and 3% respectively of British men are alcohol-dependent.

It is important to realize that not everyone who falls within a risk group for alcohol addiction will develop it. However, being aware of this fact may help you to understand why you might need to take precautions.

Genetic Factors

Your genetics and biology may influence your chances of becoming an alcoholic. Many people are able to control their alcohol intake and not feel the need to drink. Some people experience intense pleasure from alcohol consumption, which can lead to the brain wanting to continue the behavior.

Certain chemicals in your brain can make you more susceptible to alcohol addiction. These chemicals can be passed down from one generation to another.

Environmental Factors

Your attitude towards alcohol and everything depends on the environment you live in. Access to alcohol can be difficult in rural areas or countries where it is more expensive. You are more likely to become an alcoholism if you cannot access alcohol easily.

Alcohol consumption can also be affected by your wealth. Higher income people are more likely to consume excessive amounts of alcohol. The US estimates that over 80% of Americans who earn more than PS40,000 annually consume alcohol. Only 47% of those who earn less are likely to drink the substance.

Repeat Exposure

People who have never tried alcohol are less likely to develop alcoholism. Your risk of developing alcoholism is higher if you consume more alcohol. Higher alcoholism risk is for men who consume 15 or more drinks per week and women who consume 12 or more drinks per week.

If you drink five or more alcohol drinks per day, repeated exposure is a major factor in alcohol addiction.

Repeated alcohol exposure can increase your risk of developing alcoholism. This is because your body develops a tolerance to alcohol and requires more alcohol to enjoy the same pleasure. Your body cannot increase its tolerance if you only consume alcohol in limited quantities and occasionally. It can also be related to genetic predispositions, and other factors.
