Welcome to session 3 on antimicrobial resistance and prudent antimicrobial use

In this session you will learn how to use antimicrobials in livestock in a medically responsible and rational way. The session will start with an introductory explanation of antimicrobial resistance and will be followed by presentations on the global governance of antimicrobial resistance, examples of how antimicrobial use and resistance is managed in Sweden and a summary of the situation in Uganda with a focus on livestock.

The session includes lectures, presentations and films with examples provided from Sweden and Uganda. For reflections on your learning, please go through the questions below, either as self-studies or in groups.

Exercise 3 - Antimicrobial stewardship

List the most common events (disease symptoms, disease prevention and growth promotion situations) when antibiotics are used in livestock in areas where they work
Based on what you have learnt in the course, suggest alternative actions and treatment that can reduce the use of antibiotics - prioritize these (actions for tomorrow, in 3 months and in 6 months)

Groupwork instructions

For exercises in groups, divide the participant into groups of 4-5 people with a mix of stakeholders. Assign a note taker and a chair. These should be rotated and the roles equally distributed between men and women. The note taker may write down the discussion on flip chart paper or type in a word or presentation mode.
