The Training in Productive Livestock with Low Use of Antibiotics

The training package is a combination of films, filmed lectures and study questions that were developed and used in 3-day hybrid training courses held in Uganda in 2020-2021, targeting animal health professionals (veterinarians and para-veterinarians), meat traders and farmers. The training material may be used individually or together as a participatory training format. If used as a full training package, the group discussions are designed as social learning, using mixed stakeholder groups to draw on different views and encourage the participants to identify possible targets that may bring about sustainable change of practice to improve antibiotic use in livestock.

The objectives of the training are to provide:

1. A basic understanding of antibiotics and antibiotic resistance;

2. Knowledge on how to reduce the need for antibiotics by improving the overall animal husbandry and applying disease preventive measures;

3. Skills in responsible use of antibiotics in livestock and available tools to monitor AMU/R on farms.

After the training the participant will be familiar with antibiotic use and resistance and can advise farmers on how to raise productive livestock with low use of antibiotics.
